Helsinki Design Week Goes Fashion

By Heini Lehtinen

“Where are you going?”, asks Eat&Joy, a portal for Finnish creative class, opening on 4 September 2007. Almost all designers asked give the same tip: Helsinki Design Week on 14–23 September 2007.

The week containing several dozens of events is also a place to go for several fashion professionals. This year, Helsinki Design Week includes more fashion than ever.

Citizen’s Living Room

Helsinki Design Week brings new-generation fashion design to the centre of Helsinki on 14–15 September 2007 – to a forgotten space that has never been used in any event open to the public. Fashion designers Tiia Vanhatapio, Jarno Viitala, Anu Salonen (Iloa) and Hammi and Maikku Mettinen (Lustwear) have designed a collection using interior textiles of IKEA, main partner of the event.

The collection will be presented to the public in the Citizen’s Living Room, a living room-like space at the beautiful inner yard of the Helsinki City Hall. Have a cup of coffee, relax on a couch, read a magazine and enjoy the shows full of surprises.

Inner yard of the Helsinki City Hall, entrances from Sofiankatu and Katariinankatu, open on Fri 14 Sept at 10–15 and on Sat 15 Sept at 10–18. Free entrance.

IVANAhelsinki – Diamond, Stripes & Revolver

IVANAhelsinki will show its collection for the spring/summer 2008 in Suomenlinna Fortress Island, about 15 minutes boat ride off Helsinki on 14 September 2007. The show, a highlight of the opening weekend of Helsinki Design Week, is an installation and the first viewing of the collection – the next one takes place at Hotel Ritz Paris on the Paris Fashion Week.

IVANAhelsinki’s designer Paola Suhonen can also be seen on stage at the Cable Factory on 19 September, at a super-popular (and super-hilarious) Pecha Kucha evening.

Hanna Sarén – Spring/summer 2008

Designpartners’07, the main event of HDW, proudly presents: the first ever big fashion show of fashion designer Hanna Sarén’s collection. “Fashion show is like theatre, something that will stay in your mind”, says Hanna Sarén. “Growth, nature, impressiveness and uniqueness.” Hanna Sarén SS 2008 fashion show starts the opening party of Designpartners’07 on 18 September 2007.

Insight – Finnish fashion today and tomorrow

Fashion seminar Insight will take place at Designpartners’07 at the Cable Factory on Tuesday 18 September 2007. The seminar, taking place in the evening, is all about Finnish fashion and new points of view to the recent troubles and new, up-coming talents. Which are the ways to take Finnish fashion designers into international success? What is the future of Finnish fashion?

Insight will handle the issue through very heterogenic group of speakers. The evening offers a tight package of survival strategies, success stories, points of view, shaking and plenty of new to think of. The seminar will give a right to speak to six Finnish and Scandinavian fashion and marketing professionals. 15-minute speeches give a dynamic – and perhaps provocative – view to the future of the fashion industry.

Designpartners’07, Cable Factory, Helsinki 18 September 2007. Tickets 50 €/25 €, incl. Designpartners’07 opening party and the fashion show of Hanna Sarén.

Designpartners’07 wears Republica

While getting to know Designpartners at the Cable Factory, take a closer look at the staff as well – and their outfits. Republica, an internationally successful street wear label, will bring its point of view to the urban and colourful event by dressing up the Designpartners’07 staff.
